Core Terms

Public adjuster

A licensed professional who may represent an insured on a property insurance claim for a fee, subject to state law and a written agreement.

Denial

A carrier decision that the claim is not covered or not payable as presented.

Underpayment / partial approval

A decision that recognizes some payable amount while leaving other scope or pricing unresolved.

Appraisal

A policy process that may resolve certain amount-of-loss disputes when authorized and appropriate.

Recoverable depreciation

Portion of depreciation that may become payable when policy conditions are met.

Scope

The work items and quantities associated with repairing or replacing damaged property.

Date of loss

The date associated with the reported damage event.

Engagement agreement

The written contract that creates the public-adjuster relationship and defines fees and scope of work.
